Picked up a pair of these twenty years ago for parts, as the proprietary output tubes (8045) and pre-driver (6240) became unavailable at any price. The pre-driver was an direct substitute (6CG7), the output tubes required major modifications to accommodate a lower powered but similar power beam triode, the KT88/6550. The required capacitors are off-the-shelf values, the resistors needed to be custom made. The Luxman factory was very helpful with the modification instructions. Once modified to the KT88 valve, the amp sounds beautiful to my ears. I never heard then original tubes, so I can't do a direct compare. But output tubes last on the order of ten years with regular listening. I tried the new KT120 tubes and didn't hear any improvement in sound quality or volume. Perhaps they need to be re-biased for optimal results.
