Stereo Cassette Deck (1976-78)
Most quality cassette decks use the Dolby system to reduce tape noise, the Aiwa AD-1800 is no exception; but it goes one step further - not only is Dolby fitted but also DNL (Dynamic Noise Limiter) which reduces noise on non-Dolby encoded tapes. The use of this double noise reduction system results in a signal to noise ratio of better than 65dB.
The same high standards are followed in the tape transport mechanism. The flywheel is the biggest known in a cassette deck - 104mm in diameter, weighing 448 grammes and with a 5,090 g-cm torque. Perfectly balanced it works with a hysteresis synchronous motor and SST (Solid Stabilized Transport) system to reduce wow and flutter to an astonishingly low 0.05% wrms.
The prevention of overloading during recording is helped by two large, easy to read VU meters, calibrated from -20dB to +6dB, with 2 step peak indicators which flash at the +3dB (warning) and +7dB (saturation) levels.
Other features of the AD-1800 are four point alignment of the Ferrite Guard Head to ensure maximum stereo separation with minimum crosstalk, three step independent bias and equalization tape selector, tape counter with memory rewind, MPX filter, MIC/line mixing and full automatic stop mechanism. Aiwa's unique oil damped cassette ejection system adds that final touch of luxury to a fine machine.
Just one look at the AD-1800 tells you that it is good - study the specification, or best of all listen to it in operation and you will see why we feel justified in saying that the AD-1800 challenges open reel systems for the best in Hi-Fi tape.
