Here in Chile at my sister-in-laws house I found an Akai system with an AM-U04 amplifier and an Akai EA-A2 graphics equalizer, with an AT-K33 tuner and CS-MO2 tape deck. There was also a Pioneer direct drive PL-4 turntable. It was purchased around 1980 or so by her son.
I set it up and one thing confused me. The jumper from the preamp to the MAINs were missing. I had not encountered this before (I am a novice here!). I figured out that the preamp must be connected to the input of the equalizer and the output of the equalizer to the MAIN of the AM-U04.
With that, the system worked very well. The turntable needed a new needle, and I wish I had some DeoxIT F it to work the crackle out of the dials (pots). Deoxit is expensive but it does wonders.
So, for the price of a needle, I have a great stereo system here in Northern Chile.
