Harman Kardon 900+ is not only the most elegantly styled unit for the period but is also one of the best sounding flagship quad units available.
Conservatively rated at 45 Watts X 4 channels it clearly out performs my Marantz 4400 and Sansui QRX 9001 in dynamic sound and especially in SQ decode mode. Most collectors do not realize that the Japan designs used a 4 filter system for quad, HK utilized a 8 Pole proprietary design, HK contracted Jim Fosgate to engineer the 4 channel decoding for Matrix stereo and SQ decoding to provide excellent separation on converting Stereo and SQ records. The FM section works equally as well pulling in stations with no antenna and using a special circuit to measure the noise level of the station you are listing to.
The overall design is elegant, well thought out, easy to use and the Joystick speaker balance works excellent. Size of the unit is about 25% lower than a Marantz but the unit still weighs in at around 50 pounds.
Most importantly on any audio piece is the sound, this is where the HK twin power supply really shines, The audio amplifiers are based on HK legendary Citation design and the unit has the power to rock the house with lots of power, truly dynamic range over the competition of the period.
Listening to the 3 receivers I mentioned above it becomes apparent very quickly that in Quadraphonic mode ( even Stereo ) the Marantz and Sansui are lacking in separation and especially live sound dynamics compared to the HK 900+. If you are lucky enough to find one, grab it and enjoy... You will hear a difference immediately!
