Great little amp. When used with high sensitivity speakers, it sounds very good and also no one would guess the 20wpc. I used to have one as a teenager, now many many years later i bought a clean one on eBay, still sounds great as I remembered. I have mine connected to Imperial 7 speakers (like the ones I used to have back then). If you can find a good one buy it - also a good starter restoration project.

Great sound & true power

wow..for a small unit this amp puts out amazingly great highs and lows with deep bass through my kenwood speakers (which are not expensive or high end). It seems the search for an amp stuck between a compromise of a tight budget and performance is finally over. :D

re: 1040

Any one know if solely the preamp of this unit can be utilized?

Marantz 1040 amplifier / fuse problem

I have owned a second hand Marantz 1040 amplifier for the past 15 years. The sound is great, particularly when I play CDs. However, depending on vinyls, the sound is sometimes a bit distorted in the bass. (I use a project Debut carbon Esprit SB turntable with an Ortofon 2m red cartridge). I recently opened my amplifier chassis in order to try to clean the connectics. In particular, the volume knob crackles a bit.
In the process, I noticed, that one of the four fuse sockets, located directly behind the volume knob, is indeed empty. The pattern is as follows "Fuse : 2A (fuse present), 1A (fuse present), 1A (No fuse in the socket), 1A (fuse present)". I am wondering whether this is normal or whether a dead fuse was never replaced by the previous owner. Can anyone help on the matter ? I have no skills in electronics and a bit wary that adding an unfit extra 1A fuse might damage my sound system, or even much worse set it on fire or so. No sure whether I can send a picture of the device on this website ?
Thanks a lot for any comment, help or answer.
Best. Kevin

re: Marantz 1040 amplifier / fuse problem

Hi Kevin, I checked my 1040 and all 4 fuses are present in mine. Is that the one with the yellow wire ??
I would say that you can put in a fuse there.

These are fantastic little amps, strong as an ox, and just keep going.
With a turntable of similar spec and age, it sounds pretty nice. The schematics will help to make sure our one goes for another 30 years.
