MF A1001

I had the good fortune to obtain a new A1001 in 1998 for £1500.00. Although this equated to a discount of £1000.00 when compared with the MRP, it still represented a significant cash outlay (equivalent to about £3500.00 in 2012 when adjusted for inflation) and I accepted the offer of an extended home audition more out of curiosity rather than having any real intention of parting with my hard-earned cash. Seventy-two hours of extended listening later, however, my only concern was to seal the deal before the dealer had a change of heart! In the 15 years that have now elapsed, the A1001 has proved utterly reliable and a welcome provider of additional warmth in the winter months. Its great strengths, as recognised in the insightful and accurate reviews published at the time, are independent of the source (LP, CD or FM), SPL and genre of music played and any perceived shortcomings pale into insignificance when compared with the immensely satisfying listening experience it so effortlessly provides. Having recently had the A1001 rebuilt and 'breathed on' by John Sampson of JS Audio, an option that proved more attractive and cost-effective than that of obtaining a comparable replacement, I have no doubt that we shall happily live out our days together.
