* Tannoy Chester T165 Review *

A Well balanced nicely detailed loudspeaker with a solid weighty construction that oozes quality. Built in an earlier era of solid wood veneers and craftsmanship. Presentation in my modest listening room is on the warm side of natural, although soft furnishings also play a part here. Bass is well controlled, deep, weighty and plentiful so careful siting is a must to prevent exciting room nodes.

Built around the venerable Dual Concentric 2 way Point Source technology that boosted Tannoy to the upper echelons of High Fidelity manufacturers, with the ensuing reputation to match, The T165 houses the then new 2528 DC 10 Driver, a departure from traditional Paper cone to Polyolefin (Polymer family).

As with all early Dual Concentric Driver equipped Tannoy's, they are now getting collectible, so hold their value very well, with the smaller models now becoming equally as sought after as their bigger siblings.

Developed and marketed in the late seventies, in my opinion now a vintage treasure, expect to pay £400 to £600 GBP (In Nov 2014). Condition being everything as it always is. I feel the out and out sheer musicality, scale and authority that they can deliver, achieves, not only an outstanding speaker in sonic terms, but coupled with user friendly dimensions also makes them a veritable wolf in sheep's clothing. Not the last word word in High Fidelity, but no surprise that they gain a coveted Highly Recommended from me.

Partnering equipment:- [Analogue] - Thorens TD160/TP16 Mk1. Cartridges - Ortofon FF15E mk11, Ortofon OM20 Super, Goldring Elecktra. [Digital] - Linn Majik DSi NAS. OFC interconnects and speaker cables.
