Teac 3300 does not engage in play

Hello,
I am the resident guru for our local NPR station's Recording and Video Sale. We take in unwanted vinyl, cps, etc as well as unwanted gear in (hopefully) gently used condition. I have taken in a Teac 3300 tape deck that will not engage in play. I am wondering if there is a belt that drives the capstan/pinch roller or if this is a motorized function on this deck? I have had several Teac reels myself, so am aware of the quality of the deck. If it can be fixed up in time, it would be great to give it a new home. Meanwhile...does anybody know of a Sony TC-854 4S deck anywhere? It's the only deck I would take right now if I wanted to get back into reels in a big way.

Re: Teac 3300 does not engage in play

Teac 3300 - In short: A solenoid pulls up the pinch roller and the tape lifters. Mechanism gums up, which requires to be taken apart to de-grease and re-lubricate. (sometimes frozen and requires heat treatment to get it unstuck). Anticipate to spend about 1.5-2 hours - Service manual will help to see how to take it apart. Replace the capstan belt as well - it will need it. If you don't sell - shoot me an e-mail - might be interested if the price is low enough.

Many thanks :-)

Earlier A3300S Schematic needed

I'm fighting with some unusual voltages in my new to me A3300S. The posted schematics are different from my unit. Anyone have an earlier (non-SX) schematic to post? Thanks!

"Quik-Lok" Reel Holders

Can anyone tell me how to remove the larger "reel holders" so that I can play a tape with the small "standard" hub? Thanks so much for your help.

tz-651 holders

Assuming these are the ones, unlock the centre spindle as if you were unlocking a smaller reel. They come right off

I just acquired one of these

I just acquired one of these decks a few days ago. On mine, you simply loosen the center shaft inside the hub by turning it counterclockwise. Once it's a just a fraction of a turn loose, you can rotate the part with the three little wings CCW slightly to line up with the slots in the reel holders and then just slide it off. This is basically the same process you'll go through to mount and dismount a small reel.

It might be that not all the decks are the same as mine.

TEAC A-3300SX

Have this great machine but will only play at 3-3/4. When i change the
Speed switch to 7-1/2 nothing happens. I changed the speed assemble and still the same problem. Any ideas out there.

Playback on TEAC 3300S

I am playing old family recordings on the above TEAC 3300S. When it plays, you hear one voice (recording) very well but at the same time you hear what sounds like voices playing backward. Anyone know how to correct that?

Phantom Voices

Hi,

The 3300 was available in two configurations: quarter-track stereo and half-track stereo. The quarter-track version records on both "sides" of the tape, whereas the half-track unit records only "one way." The quarter-track format was more common in consumer machines, so another possibility is that you're playing a quarter-track tape on a half-track machine. This will cause odd "backwards" sounds superimposed on the normal audio.

Re; Playback on TEAC 3300S

Sounds to me that you are playing back a half track mono tape , in which case, because of the left/right channel tracks are staggered, the left channel would sound, and the right sounds backwards. Way to solve that is to turn the right channel output all the CCW, and use your amps MONO switch to listen with both speakers. To listen to side 2 of the tape, turn the Left channel control all the way CCW.

Playback on TEAC 3300S

Hi, John.
"Voices playing backward" - reason of this may be wrong heads adjustment:
either when recording or when playing, so the playback head reproduces not only its own track, but partially the neighbour (reverse) track. Check the heads adjustment: height and tilt. And additionally check the tape tension.
Best regards!
