Lafayette Radio reel-to-reel tape player

I have my father's old Lafayette Radio reel-to-reel tape player, which he apparently purchased in the early 1960s. I don't see a model number on it. The problem I'm having is it doesn't play. When I move either the play or the fast forward knobs to the correct position, the reels don't turn. But when I turn them to almost the correct position, the reels turn.
I would appreciate any solution.
Short of a solution, I would like to know what those plastic clips are called that you put on the end of a reel-to-reel tape, and where to buy some.
Thanks.

Re: Lafayette Radio reel-to-reel tape player

I do not have any suggestions for servicing the Lafayette deck, however I think the plastic clips are something with which I am familiar. These are end-clips used to secure tape to the flange of reel. It is a storage tool which helps reduce likelihood of tape spillage. I have some, dating back to 1960 and '70s. There are three distinct types in my collection: J-shaped, flattened J-shaped and U-shaped. Most of them have become brittle with age, but do still adequately secure tape to flange. The devices were used for many tape types as well as some film media. You can look at one type on the Thingverse page: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:175484 I am not aware of any vendors currently offering these clips. Most commercial ventures use a special type of end-tape, which also identifies tails-out storage condition. TME has a version available: http://usrecordingmedia.com/tmeopretaend.html Best of luck with your project.

Thank you.

Re: Lafayette Radio reel-to-reel tape player

Belts may be worn out. Not sure what you mean by plastic clips; the only thing I know of that goes on the end of tape is leader tape.

Re: Lafayette Radio reel-to-reel tape player

Do you know of any place to order new belts?

Re: Lafayette Radio reel-to-reel tape player

The only place I can suggest for belts is Marrs Communications. If you do not have old belts for reference, it will be necessary to take measurements with strings and other means.
