OCR Service Manuals

TheDHndrsn's picture

The PDF service manuals (for obvious reasons) are password locked to prevent content change. But, it would be convenient to run OCR using Acrobat on same to allow full text search for specific words. Plowing through a couple hundred pages to find a single paragraph reference about belt service, for example, is a complete pain, especially when the subject is embedded in an unexpected section. Would it be possible to access a full text version of these manuals?

Re: OCR Service Manuals

Hi,
You will have to be more specific about which manuals you are referring to? Most manuals are between 10-50 pages and contain the original content/index page so finding the relevant page isn't normally be a problem. Unfortunately it isn't possible to run OCR on all documents in the library (17K+) as the process is very time consuming and as documents vary in DPi/scan quality the process has to be manually verified.

Re: OCR Service Manuals

In this instance it was the service manual for the Nak LX-3. Lengthy manual and the specific knowledge was burried well into the document. Do not know if the need will arise again, just a general idea for longer manuals. Full text search would be convenient if searching for reference to a particular component or procedure in a long manual.
Is a full text version possible with special request?

Re: OCR Service Manuals

I need to some research into compatibility first to see if the OCR'd files are PDF standards compliant.

Re: OCR Service Manuals

Acrobate Pro can be used to run OCR on imported image docs such as those used with the service manuals here. Would have run it myself except the docs are PW proteced. As stated above, makes sense. Cannot speak to if this creates copyright issues with the manual authors, although it likely shoud not be a problem.
Thanks!

Re: OCR Service Manuals

Hi,
I know that Acrobat Pro can produce searchable documents (every file on the site has been processed with Acrobat Pro), the problem is getting it to output searchable ISO standard files that can be added to the site. While I don't offer support for PDF readers other than Acrobat, I do try to make sure that all files are created to the ISO standard so that any standards compliant reader will open them.

JaS

OK. Not a problem. Just an idea.
Appreciate the response.
