Sansui 5500 problem

I have a Sansui 5500 I purchased in Dec of 72, and it has been working well. Now I'm having an issue when I turn it on as there is no sound until I turn the gain all the way up, then I get full sound, and can then turn the gain back down to a reasonable sound level. However, one or both channels frequently drop out.
This started with the left channel, and now the right also.
I assume it is probably an issue in the amplifier section and running the gain all the way up finally causes a transistor to fire.
Anyone had a similar problem? Any recommended fixes?
Thanks,

Sansui 5500 problem

Hi,
Could be the problem related by Paul and in the pre-amp circuit the transistors. Don´t measure them, just changed. It´s a possible cause for your problem

Thank you, I"ll try that as soon as I get some decent schematics.

Sansui 5500 problem

Hi, Could be the protection relay contacts burnt. Have had this before on other amps. Suggest you short the pins closed and then check for sound at low level. Hope this helps, Paul.
