speed change switch

I have a vintage Akai 1800D-SS . Pulled it out of basement. It is in spotless condition and runs fine. My question is this... it turns on and when I put a tape in play, it runs at the low speed cart in the top speed change switch. If it is just turned on... it will go and run into the high speed position, but when I turn it to play the tape, it dies, until I go to the low cart speed again. Any suggestions? Thanks so much.

speed change switch

This is really testing my memory; I believe the speed should be changed when the deck is in play mode. This is because the belt is bumped into a different position on the flywheel and it must be turning to perform this properly.
Hope this makes sense.

Hi Johnny...Thanks for getting back to me. Good thoughts and memory pulling from you....question...if it runs in play at slow speed and then all things stop when I put it on the high speed, what could be the problem...possibly?

Belts could be bad. Also, the lubrication tends to dry out in the older decks, so the speed change mechanism may not be functioning properly.
