Tascam 22-4 Play back volume at repro head for track 4 very faint

Just picked up a Tascam 22-4 on eBay and I am having trouble with channel 4 on playback. Vu meter is reading a good signal when I put track 4 into record and monitor other tracks in sync mode (at record head) but when I go to playback, track 4 only recorded a faint signal. I have to turn the output all the way up to hear it. Tried it again with record at higher level but still not much difference. I alsotried flipping the tape over and playing it backwards only to see if a signal recorded on track 4 which would be on track 1 backwards. No signal or very little so the recording vu should input but it did not record on the tape. Any suggestions?

Make sure your heads are really clean. If there was any residue left on the heads for years it may take a long time to clean it off. Use alcohol and swabs. Inspect the heads under high magnification.
You may have dirty contacts in the relays for either record or playback or both. Sometimes the relays need to be removed and cleaned by hand with a burnishing tool; you can't just spray cleaner in there and hope for the best.
Could also be poor soldering or connections.

Just wanted to let you know my machine is working like new or at least it is working better than when I first got it. You were right about the heads. I turned the machine upside down and began to inspect the heads and clean them. Man! I had to go over them several times to get all the crud off. I guess they have either never been cleaned or were cleaned improperly. I used de-oxit on all the pots and connectors as well. Thanks for the advise!
