Tascam VU Meter question

Over the years, I needed something rack-mountable and dependable and that usually brought me to the basic Tascam 112 (unbalanced) cassette deck. I have found that oftentimes it was cheaper and more cost-effective to buy another unit rather than fix the one that would malfunction. For instance, for the cost of the repair or less expensive than the cost of the repair I could buy another unit with probably fewer miles on it and I would be better off in most cases. So, now I have three non-working Tascams sitting in the garage and one that squeaks during normal play along with one working machine and another machine that is in nice shape except for the fact that the left meter does not reflect any audio being played back. The meter lights up but does not reflect audio. Is there a calibration for the vu meters or do I pull one out of the non-working machines and swap it out? Also, I have the service manual and I appreciate that but what about diagnosing it? How do I know exactly what is wrong based on what is or what is not happening with regard to the unit and why it is not doing what it is supposed to be doing?

Re: Tascam VU Meter question

Clean the record-playback switches first to see if that corrects the meter problem.

Re: Tascam VU Meter question

Open her up and spray contact cleaner?

Re: Tascam VU Meter question

Sorry, I should have looked at the schematic first; your deck does not use switches for record-playback--it uses electronics switching. Your problem has to be either a bad meter, bad driver IC for the meter (U101), poor connections, or bad power supply voltage to that IC.

Re: Tascam VU Meter question

This sounds considerably more involved. I can replace the vu meter from the non-working ones but not sure how to do that. The service manual is not clear on that. Also, have no way to determine that if it isn't that, is any of the other things? I may just opt to leave it that way; after all, it works at least.
So, I have four non-working ones and two that seem to work.
