TEAC X-3 slow or no rewind function

I just setup my TEAC X-3 which has been in storage some 20+ years. It seems to function as it should with the exception of the rewind function. Depending on how much tape is on the source reel will depend on how fast the tape rewinds. Sometimes it will rewind most of the tape but usually when it gets to the end it slows down really bad and then stops. Since these are DC motors is this a sign the motor is going bad? Is it possible to refurbish the motor or should I just bite the bullet and replace the motor? Any input would be helpful. Thanks

Re: TEAC X-3 slow or no rewind function

Could be a torque adjustment problem, or something odd like reel table height not being correct or the brake not releasing all the way. Unlikely for a motor to just go bad; if it moves freely (with the brake disengaged) then it's not a lubrication problem.

Re: TEAC X-3 slow or no rewind function

I checked the torques adjustment and reel table height and by the instructions in the service manual both are correct. While checking I also checked my problem again. The problem also affect fast forward as well and fast rewind. The problem only occurs when:

A. When fast rewind is engage and the take up reel becomes 3/4 full the fast rewind function decreases and stops.

B. When fast forward is engage and the take up reel becomes 3/4 full the fast forward function decreases and stops.

I also checked to see if the brake might be engage or have some drag, but both reel turn freely.

Now that it affects both functions does it help in come to a remedy?
