Technics SL-Q2

New here guys! Just scored one of these turntables wondering what cartridge/ needle may be recommended as a replacement my budget is around $75.00, it currently has a Stanton but it sounds horrible thinking it needs to be replaced.

Yes it's the s arm style, gonna attempt the set up this weekend I'll post with results when I'm done

If the cartridge sounds bad, I'd replace the stylus. Stanton is a very accurate cartridge with a fairly flat uncolored sound. A bad stylus could make it sound bad, but that's not the cartridge it's the stylus.
You may not care for the particular sound of the cartridge, but that's a matter of personal taste. Go to a store the carries turntables and audition different cartridges until you find one that fits your needs.

I have always had good success with that cart, a very smooth one by my ears. Is this the linear track version or the s arm style? linear is pretty much locked in set up wise. if it's the s arm, I second a reset of the table. If you're new to vinyl here's how you do it. Go online and download /print out a protractor. Follow the directions for proper placement and alignment of the cart in the headshell. Once that's nailed down re balance the tonearm. Do do that, with the cue down and the table off adjust the weight so the arm floats perfectly horizontal and then set the dial, not the weight so it reads zero. Raise the cue and the rotate the weight. So it tracks at about 1.5. That's what my 681 liked the best. Then adjust the anti skate to the same number and you're set. If it still sounds like garbage check that stylus. Magnifying glass or even a good camera on your phone can get you a good look at it. Make sure it sits right in the cart and isn't wonky. Then report back.

Didn't some of the Technics TTs have a factory pre-set weight for the cartridge? If you use a different cartridge than recommended it can sound bad. Does it appear that the weight is adjusted properly? Moving or shipping may have changed this adjustment.

Dunno it currently has a Stanton 681 eee which I think is the original cartridge/ needle, perhaps your right though I should to calibrate it and see if that works. I'm new to vinyl so I'm learning as I go
