Trio/Kenwood Kx-520 cassette deck - permanet click-click noise

All the time the power is on, my Trio (Kenwood) KX-520 (early 1970s) makes a click-click noise, as if it's slipping a ratchet. But it still plays the cassettes OK, doesn't chew them up, and does fast-reverse and fast-forward. Any ideas? Thanks

It seems like autostop mechanism is trying to stop the deck but don't gets it.
Very probably it is caused by dryed grease and a cleaning and re-lubing will solve the problem.

Might be motor noise, but the motor should not be on with power on unless you are in a mode like play or fast forward. The switch may be defective or stuck in the wrong position. Check to see if the capstan is moving with power on--if so, there is a problem.
