Originally produced as an “in-between” speaker for those who wanted something a bit better than an AR2ax, but didn’t want to spend the extra money for AR3as, the AR5 uses the same crossover design as the AR3a, but a 10” woofer (as in the 2ax, but a slighter different design).
When compared, the AR5 has a slightly brighter sound with a tighter bass response than the AR2ax, and some consider the bass better sounding than the AR3a.
I have 2ax’s and two pairs of AR5s (one pair is the European version with a slightly different cabinet). As with most older AR speakers, if you find a pair, the woofers will probably need re-foamed, but definitely worth the time!
