Absolutely incredible class-A sounding 'Reference Master' series. Clean. Refined. Top-notch musical presentation and clear separation of instruments within a soundstage. Power to spare. Incredibly advanced, practical inputs from 1988, including digital optical and digital coaxial, allowing integration with modern-day digital equipment! Also, has a MM phono input. This integrated is the smaller version of the venerable AM-93. Both are incredible amplifiers and fly under the radar because nobody expects much from Akai (at least here in the states). I would highly recommend picking one. It will easily outperform any modern day AVR in terms of sound quality, it absolutely crushed my top-of-the-line $4,300 Yamaha RX-Z1 receiver.

Scratchy pots are a common issue on the 'direct operation' knob and others, causing dropouts in sound. Easy fix within a few minutes by removing the top cover and squirting some deoxit on the problem switches while working them back and forth. The AM-73 is certainly worth maintaining if you are lucky enough to encounter one. It is going to sound better than most anything you can buy for a similar price point on the used market and is waaay more functional and useful compared to other (analog limited) integrateds of the same era because of its digital inputs. Highly recommended as well as other Akai cd players from the same era (1986-1988) Lively, HiFi Sound!

re: AM-73

I have had my am-73 since new, however a long time ago it died, so I boxed it up, wrapped it and put it into storage. Now that I have this service manual I am definitely going to get it working again!

This is a fantastic amplifier, and I agree nobody would have expected it from Akai!
