re: GX-215D

Can anyone help me with a video or something similar to see how to change the belt to the capstain engine. I have looked into the service manual but find nothing. Thanks in advance.

GX-215D left channel noise

Hello -- new R2R owner here.

Recently got a used GX-215D and there is a noise (like a wind blowing) present in the left channel only as soon as I turn the lever to "play" regardless whether a tape is on or not. Only on the left channel, not the right. About 10db worth.

I bought this mostly to record digital FROM existing tapes. That noise is going to be a problem.

Thoughts, or tips to track this down?

re: GX-215D left channel noise

Usually the 2SC458 transistors on the audio amplifier p.c.board need to be replaced. It's known that these transistors will turn defective after 20 to 30 years causing a hiss in one or both channels.
This is not a difficult thing to do but you need some soldering skills and of course you need to know what you are doing. You can replace them by 2SC2240GR or KSC1845 transistors since the Original 2SC458 types may no longer be available.

re: GX-215D

I've just purchased my first Reel to Reel and I would like to know what is the best tape to run through this machine. I'll be using it for recording and re-recording tracks (audio engineering)

I've been told Maxell XLI 35-90B.. Is this correct?

Thanks in advance

Also received a GX215D as my first deck -- and wonder if there is a basic user manual available?
