Arcam A60

The Arcam A60 Amplifier delivers unsurpassed sound quality and performs with its legendary reliability. It is presented in a highly attractive but appealingly restrained cabinet that will continue to please for years to come. This equipment is genuinely in a class of its own.

The A60 can accept any magnetic or moving coil cartridge. The cartridge may be optimally matched by the addition of a switchable loading module and, in the case of a low output moving coil cartridge, the internally fitted MC 60 pre-amplifier board.

All the inputs to the A60 have high overload margins so that almost any input source can be accepted without distortion. A switchable high frequency filter is fitted to reduce the noise from scratches on old records and stereo FM noise on tuners.

The bass and treble controls have been designed so that deficiencies in some small speakers and cartridges may be corrected without coloration of the mid frequency band. All input sockets have high quality silver plated contacts for minimum noise.

The loudspeakers are connected via heavy duty screw terminals which can accept either bare wires or 4mm plugs. Although the speaker sockets are wired directly to the amplifier outputs to obtain the best possible sound quality, switched outputs are also fitted enabling the speakers to be cut out when headphones are plugged in.

Tape recording outputs are provided from both auxiliary and tape sockets, matching the inputs of both cassette and reel-to-reel recorders. The tape button allows source / tape monitoring of the signal when using a tape recorder with separate record and playback heads, while preset replay level controls are provided so that the A and B levels can be equalised.

The amplifier section of the A60 is designed to ensure distortion free drive to loudspeakers of moderate to high efficiency in the most demanding of home listening environments. Maximum power is typically 40 watts per channel into 8 ohm speakers. Electronic protection in the power output stages safeguards against any incorrect loads or short circuits.

Owned a few of amps over the years, and got to say the A60 rates extremely high for me, it's simple design is perfect and never boring like the vage boxes around today,, paired with a t21 the nostalgic look is complete.
The sound is sure-footed and solid, very easy to listen to with open detail in abundance, with more than enough power. Good quality leads are a must, please please don't rely on the cheaper Leads from eBay and the like.
I recently pitted the a60 against another amplifier of mine costing 2k, and you know what,, there's hardly any difference.

Still a gem from the British hifi School.
Warm and smooth but, at the same time, open detailed and bright without being fatiguing at all. One can think it cut the corners but it , for sure , does not cut details. It is simply natural in the most effective way.
The 3D soundstage is impressive.
Any kind of music is kindly whispered in your ears with its involving silky nature. One could listen to the music forever, happily and never get tired.

re: A60

I would love to see a scan of the cartridge (mm) loading module instructions. I have the module, but not the switch settings...

re: A60 universal loading module

Hi there:

I don't have one of the ULM but if you take a look at the HiFi Magic brochure that is downloadable from here there is the spec.
The additional loads are 100ohm, 30ohm 10ohm 100nF and a user programmable one. I guess there are some spare holes into which a capacitor or resistor can be added for the programable one
Do you have a meter in which case you could take a reading as each of the five switches are "in" and see what happens.
Good luck and happy listening.

Update - Jan 2019 I took a look around and found a copy of the instructions for ULM card. I will upload.

re: A60

Super amplifier: proud owner since 1981. Now has a scratchy volume pot so need to replasce it. Any suggstions where I can purchase one?

re: A60

I replaced the pot on my A-60 with an Alps blue velvet and it's brilliant , My repair guy said the original pots are not that great and i noticed that the overall sound got better when the alps was in

re: A60

New volume pot, may be an idea to try switch cleaner first?
