My 500B was in rough shape when I purchased the receiver. I wanted to set up a second system with vintage equipment and The Fisher was a coveted unit since I first saw it back in 1963 at an audio store my Dad frequented.
When restoring any older unit it is highly recommended to re-cap which I did through the Fisher Doctor in Staten Island NY.I found Mr.Puglese very helpful and he has proved a good resource for information. (I'm not affiliated with the gentleman and in fact reside in a different country!) The 7591 power tubes are readily available today and very reasonably priced (JJ's & EH) which makes it attractive in it's own right. A good quality pair of 12AX7's for the phono section is also highly recommended. I used Genalex Gold Lions and the receiver sings. A wide and deep soundstage - better than any unit should sound that is 52 years old. It is a highly musical unit, great mids, and bass with highs marginally rolled off.
The Fm multiplex can be a bit of a problem and will need re-alignment. With an antenna, it pulls in a strong signal across the dial.
After comparing the 500B to a comparable Scott or Eico from that same time, the Fisher has proved to be a far better performer overall.
The one problem of course, as with any vintage receiver are the strips which forces one to use bare wire for connecting speakers. This of course limits you to unshielded cables. RCA's are also much closer so you can't use some of the better connectors. Eichman's are a tight squeeze.
