As is, it is a Philips player in a heavier chassis. All in all a smart design, quality CDM and natural sounding DAC. The Philips TDA 1543 is maybe slightly more coloured than the TDA 1541. I own a lot of the 1st generation Philips players, most of which have a plastic lightweight chassis. This has a feel of quality to it. The display cell is also HQ. These can be picked up cheaply. Plays back CD-R no problem. In general the Philips based players are a lot more reliable than any of the other makes in the standard 80's consumer range.
