I was looking for a preamp to complete my system but couldn’t find anything half decent at at a reasonable price, then I come across one of these for £160, read the review from the previous poster and decided to take a chance on it.
This is a high quality preamp that I can wholeheartedly recommend, only bad thing is that they are extremely rare so if you one at a sensible price then snap it up.

This pre amplifier is one of the last series when HK really made high end audio gear. This pre amp doesn't have any opamps. It is totally build with discrete components. The philosophy was that opamps don't have a natural sound. By using only discrete circuits the result is wide bandwidth and low negative feedback, essential for the smooth clear, natural sound. I compared the AP2500 with the Adcom GFP-555 and NAD114 pre amp. In comparison the HK really does sound more natural and coherent. The Adcom sounds analytical and not smooth. While NAD114 sounds warm and woolly. In my opinion the AP2500 is a secret gem. It is a class A build pre amplifier with a great natural sound, wide and detailed stereo image. It pairs very good with my Bryson 3B power amplifier.

AP2500, a minimalist classic

The Harman Kardon AP2500 preamplifier is a far superior sounding preamp than Adcom, NAD or Parasound in the under $1K market. It represent the best in solid state preamp design. Its sound is natural, transparent with an outstanding stage. The sound stage is wide and deep and stable. I am particularly fond of its headphone amplifier when driving the Sennheiser HD-600. It spread the sound stage in front of you instead of in your head. The all discrete class A headphone amplifier is better than many dedicated one on the market today (2018). It is a minimalist design with only input selector and a volume control. No tone or balance circuit.
