Almost a great pre amp. The only issue is the hum / buzzing from the EQ section which is common for this model.

I had a C11, the model with the gain controls on the back. I had it fully recapped and serviced and still had a very loud hum coming from the EQ. When pressing the EQ bypass button the hum disappeared completely. However if you want the contour effect the EQ has to be enabled.

Apparently this issue can be fixed but also apparently very few people know how to fix it properly.

I highly recommend using the Citation 17 instead.

I bought one for a second system that I have in another house. Best in it is irrepressible natural tonality. He is so good on this point that I haven't ear nothing like it. A lot of more expensive preamplifiers like Audio research ls7 has stronger deviations in tonality that you can hear it in the system no matter what you do. The electrical diagram is quite like Dynaco PAT 4 (only the audio circuit) with different components giving much better results on image smoothness and tonality.
The biggest negative point is related with is age, some grainy sound that you can hear only in very high definition systems. It is also not the best pre for power amps difficult to drive.
I Highly recommend this pre to drive tube power amps or other easy driving amps. If you have one I recommend that all electrolytic capacitors are replaced for new ones ( good audio capacitors).

re: Citation 11

Just trying to find out what the 2 gain controls are for on the back panel of my Citation 11 preamp. I can't find these controls mentioned in the owners manual. Thanks

re: Citation 11

Those control the output level of the pre-amp. The idea here is to be able to match this pre-amp with different amplifiers having varied input sensitivity and impedance requirements. For example, You could adjust the range of your master volume using these controls so that the max volume from the Cit. 11 will not over-drive your amp into distortion. Thus protecting your high frequency drivers as well as you ears and your amp. Pretty nice feature that was not available on the earlier builds of this model.
