Harman Kardon PM640
Hi-Current Capability Integrated Amplifier (1983-84)
Description
The PM640 is by far the most sophisticated design you'll find in a moderately powered integrated amplifier.
Although conservatively rated at 35 watts per channel, the PM640's High Instantaneous Current Capability allows it to deliver far more peak power when speakers demand it. In fact under high load conditions, the PM640 will easily outperform amplifiers rated at twice the power.
You also get the open, transparent sound found only in components with low negative feedback and ultra wide band response.
The PM640 is a full featured unit. It can accommodate two sets of speakers and two tape decks. It also lets you copy from one tape deck to the other, and provides loudness contour, subsonic filter and tone defeat. There is even a switch that lets you listen in mono, stereo or stereo reverse.
If you are building your first system of separates, you should definitely listen to the PM640. It is simply the most accurate, most musical integrated amplifier in its class.

Outstanding amp. Immersive sound, bass is deep but well controlled, soundstage wide and deep, detailing is clear transparent and dynamic. One of the great mid level amps of its era. Love this amp.

My first amplifier. Bought from The Music Room in Glasgow in 1982 (I think) along with Michell Focus 1 turntable and Celef Domestic 2 speakers. Did sterling service for several years until replaced by a Linn Majik i (which to be honest wasn't much better). Sold to a mate, wish I'd kept it. Good, honest wee amp.

re: PM640
Bought one of these back in 1985 along with a TU910 tuner and a pair a Mirage speaker!! It was great, was stole from me in 1994, regret it very much!
