It's a great receiver, the sound quality is excellent, far better than I excepted. It's even got a speaker relay which a lot of more expensive receivers of its class don't. This is a more modern receiver from the time they were preparing for the 80's, so it's got more plastic fantastic (all the buttons are made out of plastic), the knobs aren't made out of plastic, but the finish is matching the buttons which makes you think that they're plastic until you touch them. Each knob has 2 shiny rings which makes them look better and fancier. The finish of the faceplate isn't the prettiest, the alluminium is barely brushed (unlike the Pioneers that have nice and shiny brushed faceplates and knobs) and the bottom plate is made out of thin particle board. I like the power LED meters, they're cool to look at, but other than the finish/cosmetical look it's a very good sounding and well built receiver and it's totally worth buying one since they don't cost a lot. Today, in 2016 they go for about 50 to 80 Euros. Good luck finding a Pioneer or Marantz of the same class with the same power and everything for the same price! These regular Hitachi receivers/amps seem to be underestimated, but they're really great and definitely worth a lot more than they currently are! I'm sure even back when they were new they were high value for money. If you're gonna buy an SR-604, be careful if you're gonna clean the faceplate. the lettering isn't the best, so you might risk washing the lettering off!

Ahead of its time. Staged output section with plenty of headroom. Very sweet sound overall.

re: SR-604

Got this from a lady who bought it new in 1079. Sounds great. Don't shy away from this great little receiver
