I know there are Infinity SM series haters out there what I don't understand is why. No these are not Infinity's high end offering and yes they where an attempt to sell in a market niche. When I first obtained my SM-122 for $50 at an estate sale, the cases were in like new condition but the 12 woofers needed refoamed. I agree the sound was bass heavy and the case construction didn't help that problem. I tightened up the cases with additional corner braces. Next I tried filling the cases with polyfill but the polyfill made the 12 woofers sound dead. Next I installed Soundproofing Foam Acoustic Eggcrate Tiles, that and adjustment to the Tweeter's and Midrange speakers made huge difference in the sound. Given the low impedance of the speakers they need very little power to perform well. Connected to my Yamaha Rx-A2070 the 140 WPC barely cracking the volume dial seemed to overpower the SM-122's. When connected to my vintage Pioneer SX-737 the 35WPC and rich mid 1970's audio brought the SM-122's to life. I played a variety of rock, country, jazz, all sounding acceptable given my minimal investment.

re: SM-122

Infinity speakers sound pretty good as far as the brand product range. From what I’ve experienced, none would I call bad or horrible. Comparison within Infinity speakers and their timeline is moot and a lot of fun.
It’s fun to use speakers and swap them for different speakers. I just swapped SM-115 for SM-122 that I bought for $8.99 each. I didn’t need them. But I did.
The SM-122 is larger, much heavier, and seems better made than the SM-115. Both are what I’d call “party speakers” instead of studio monitors.
Nothing really stands out to note about. No complaints. They are just big affordable speakers that you’ll enjoy loud. Great for heavy metal.
