I just picked up the JR-S501 from our local shop...after a complete tear down/cleaning, it looks brand new. Connected it to my Cerwin Vega DX-7...it's party time! This unit is a power house of good, clean tones. Money well spent.

Great monster receiver

Reviewed Sep 12th, 2016 by dtiberius

I received one of these monsters from a friend. It was in great shape but the power switch would sometimes arc and cause the dial lights to flicker and smoke to rise from the switch! I found info online about a triac mod that could be done to the switch and that solved the problem! This receiver is one of the most, unique looking units I've ever owned, lol! If you can get past the looks you will find a very clean and powerful sounding unit! It's sound quality really surprised me! And it's built like a tank! It has given my Yammy CR-2020 some serious competition!

re: JR-S501

I still have and use a 501. Bought it new in the summer of 79. It was the best stereo in the fraternity house back in the day! It is a garage unit now but the power button won't hold on. Power will go through if you get the button in just the right spot. I suspect it's maybe just dirty but might need a new button.
Any help on how to clean it and/or where to get the button would be great.

re: JR-S501

I’m writing this in 2019, while listening music played in one of these superb and impecable well built receivers. After 41 years is still looking and sounding as the first day.
This JVC is unique in terms of looks and audio quality. The equalizer section is second to none, very versatile inputs and a powerful amp section
One of the underestimated members of the 70/80 monster receivers war.
If you’re a collector this is a must.
Quality to its best.
