I bought a pair of Magnepan MG-1 Improved speakers in 1984. The sound stage is terrific, and smooth reproduction. However, these speakers need attention to placement in the room to sound their best. Most Maggies of this vintage eventually experience debond between the driver wires and the Mylar membrane, due either to to much flexing a loud operations or just the effect of thermal expansion and contraction between the wires and membrane. They are fairly easy to rebond at home. Many Maggie owners have upgraded the crossovers to higher quality parts. These speakers start losing bass response about 100 Hz, and may sound better with a sub. They are great for reasonable listening levels. If operated at extremely loud (rock and roll concert) volume, the diaphragm may move far enough to impact the magnet assembly, which sounds awful.
