re: 4230

Just wondering what the issue might be as the left channel crackles loudly with volume off. With volume up the crackle remains the same loudness and the output sound is distorted. Right channel seems o.k but there does seem to be some interference from the left.
Update to this;
Working channels are,
Front right on main and remote but not front left
Rear left on main and remote but not rear right
The non working channels just crackle loudly

re: 4230

Hey eleong2,

I had the same problem with mine back in 1975. Same side, same problem. I had it checked out a few months back and the guy said that it needed repaired again. Must be a problem with this model. Its fixed now and sounds as good as it did new! Let me know how it works out for you.

re: 4230

THANKS for the manuals. I bought my Marantz 4230 new in about 1974 but it didn't come with a manual. I tried for several years to get one but never managed to so I finally gave up. I am happy to have found this one here since I recently had mine upgraded and tuned up. NOW I will finally know how to use it RIGHT! :-)

re: 4230

I also bought my 4230 in 1974, ordered it at the AAFES in Athens,Greece. Had it drop shipped home, where my brother blew out the left channels "testing it" while I was overseas. When I got home it had been repaired, apparently not right. It failed again, so I bought all of the manuals back then. It had been sitting in storage until now and since I am finding time now to repair it, I am anxious to get it working again. My unit is very "low mileage", since I didn't get a chance to use it much. The visible beauty of the unit powered on is what sold me on this unit, not to mentioned that distinctive Marantz sound. I am happy to find this web site and the generous people that donate documentation, we have to keep this equipment alive. Their classics!

re: 4230

Would anybody have the owners manual of the 4230 type with PRE OUT and MAIN IN connections? I discovered that connecting something to PRE OUT results switching off the the power amplifier and as a result the Headphones can no longer be used. I was wondering what the manual says about it.

re: 4230

Hi,

There are RCA jacks that have switches built-into them. Try to find a pair of RCA Y connectors. One with two male plugs on one end and a female on the other, but any will do. Plug the male ends into both the pre-amp and main-in jacks. The female jack will be used to supply signal to your external device. This will allow you to use both an internal and external amp.
