Truly, a great Redbook CD player.

My McIntosh MCD-7000 is in need of a full recap, so the HD-CD1 has replaced it until I'm ready to tackle that project.

In my opinion, which may vary from yours, the HD-CD1 is smart looking, very well built, deceptively heavy, and sounds terrific!

I think Marantz decided to build a no frills but very good Redbook only CD player that can deliver well beyond its price point. It uses the same Cirrus Logic DAC (CS4398) as found in some quite pricey cd players (and probably stand-alone DACs too), along with their discrete HDAM circuitry to very good effect.

There is no variable analog output (except for the headphone output), but there are both coax and optical outputs if the need arises. All of the typical cd player functions are covered.

It took a fair while for the circuits to burn in, so at first I was a little disappointed with the sound, but now I find this player to have a finely detailed musical presentation with any music genre I listen to. The lack of a variable output isn't too much of a concern for me, as my Akai PS-200C pre has a two level attenuator, but I am considering dropping the gain of its line amp from 20 to 10 to better accommodate this small issue.

Absolutely no regrets.
