Had some time to kill while on road trip. Checked FB marketplace and saw this for a very decent price. Never owned a Marantz so why not see what all the fuss is about? Met the seller about an hour later. After a week sitting on my bench got around to testing it. Probably the cleanest Marantz I’ve seen for under three bills.
Everything works. Currently streaming GoGo Penguin through my DAC. Very crisp highs with detailed bass. Still haven’t determined if the mid knob does anything. All in all a very good addition to my collection.

Very nice sounding and powerful 50 watts per channel. Drives Quality and Vintage speakers very well. The sound is warm and detailed at low and high volumes. I have other Marantz and other vintage receivers that collectors are tripping over each other to get and pay way more for but this one performs just as well as many of those. If you can pick one of these up, you wont regret it.

This was a solidly constructed and good performing receiver of it's time. The 'gyro' tuning dial was unique to Marantz tuners/receivers and felt well made and really cool to use, with a quick flick of the thumb to get the weighted dial moving fast.

re: SR4000

There is an error in the service manual. On page 22 (23 of the pdf). Capacitors C801 and C802 are listed as 1,000 mF. That should be 10,000 mF.

I have several of these receivers and they come equipped with 10,000 mF capacitors. 1,000 mF is way too small for the bridge rectifier smoothing capacitors on an amp this size.

re: SR4000

Thanks. Saw that when I was installing some new filter caps.
