The numerical rating takes into account that this is a small system; for its size, it is very good. It provides good midrange and treble, and surprisingly good bass. FM reception works in urban Washington DC. I have the matching CP-1 CD/Cassette player, but don't have the manual for it. My Dayton Audio Sub 800 is an inexpensive way to supplement the bass.

re: RS-1

I have the same receiver (?) but without the matching speakers nor the CP-1 cassette/cd player (activity looking for one tho).
On the receiver I have, the model is R-1. Not RS-1, speakers.
It's a small receiver. Heavy too.The specs are great and so is the sound this little dude puts out. It's definitely full range if connected to the right speakers. But if you want to go big, the preOut/mainIn rca jacks can come in handy. I've used this as a preamp connected to a 200wpc power amp, 120wpc power amp, 80wpc power amp, and a 40wpc amp ( not at the same time) and the results are loud and clear. The tuner is no slouch either. Multiple preset stations options. Separate tone controls. The display illumination is green.
The rear has: There's only one set of rca "AUX" jacks. One set of speaker terminals. It's got a switch for the display illumination brightness, low-high. A switchable AC outlet. A remote jack. AM/FM antenna screw connections.
I use the R-1 as my traveling stereo. Perfect sounding for smaller rooms and the compatibility with hotel/motel AV systems integrates well. Connect a iPod and Triad system 6 speakers and I'm a happy man with a happy woman having a happy time.
All in all it blows me away how good this little receiver sounds.
One thing to note...maybe it's just on mine, but when I power the unit ON...the volume is rather loud. I got to instantly turn it down.
