re: M-5160

I bought this set up back in the early 90's,amp,pre amp and tuner. I have been using it ever since a lot. Never a problem and always seems to sound awesome. Recently guys are telling me that I should do an upgarde. I'm torn,do I go with a different amp or do I have this one restored? This is in my main livingroom so it gets more use then anything else. I would hate the thought of losing the remote for one. Thanks to this site,I found the specs on it and I think they are pretty good. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

re: M-5160

Nice system. I have a few Onkyo receivers and cassette decks and a Onkyo 5150 power amp. All are troopers for reliability. Pretty much they all work good. I like the power amp because it's 150 watts and runs cool. However the frequency response is wide and 150 watts, the damping factor sucks. IMO, that is reason to look for another amplifier that has at least a damping factor of 160. It really does make a huge difference. The tuner and preamp are fine. I also noticed speaker wires with some silver sound better for hearing the detail as opposed to 100% copper wire which seem to have a narrower sound stage but more obese. If that makes sense. Overall I do like Onkyo's sound. I also have a Integra DTM 5.3 receiver that's sounds great!
