I have owned an Aiwa ADF-810 and several other high end single and double cassette decks over the years. I purchased a used Onkyo TARW400 in 2010. The guy had taken very good care of it. I have a sizeable tape collection and the Onkyo not only sounds terrific, but also operates flawlessly and quietly.

re: TA-RW400

It's possible that you have another model, but the Onkyo TARW400 does not have any kind of "on-board calibration" or fine bias adjustment. It has Auto Tape Selection (detects Normal, High Bias or Metal types), which is very different, and is common on most cassette decks built after 1983. Yes, generally speaking, it sounds quite good with most cassette formulations.

In recent memory, I have not seen any dual-well cassette decks with an auto record calibration or fine bias adjust. Most of those features are exclusive to higher end, single-well decks.

re: TA-RW400

Great deck. Perfect sound for a double auto rev design. The looks dont give justice to what he is capable of. Calibrate (on board procedure) bias current at correct values, result...pristine recordings.
