Pioneer SA-5800

Pioneer engineers kept in mind a dynamic concept when the SA-5800 was still in the drawing board stage.

The choices of circuitry and design at that stage were based on what has come to be known as our Magni-Wide policy in amplifiers.

The policy does not dictate circuitry designs per se; nor does it restrict us to using tried and true circuit parts when something newer (and possibly even less costly) can be substituted without harm to musicality.

The policy does set ever-higher parameters in three critical performance areas, however: Dynamic response, Frequency range and Transient response.

Techniques of reducing noise and distortion (of many kinds) are employed to achieve these parameters in the SA-5800.

Power output: 25 watts per channel into 8Ω (stereo)

Frequency response: 20Hz to 40kHz

Total harmonic distortion: 0.03%

Damping factor: 30

Input sensitivity: 2.5mV (MM), 150mV (line)

Signal to noise ratio: 76dB (MM), 98dB (line)

Output: 150mV (line)

Semiconductors: 3 x IC, 21 x transistors, 18 x diodes

Dimensions: 451 x 151 x 271mm

Weight: 7.3kg

Year: 1979

This is a clean sounding unit. Really good solid unit. It is a great example of a by gone era.

re: SA-5800

Does anyone know the part # for a replacement bass eq knob & pot? Thanks in advance.

re: SA-5800

Knob is AAB-204 and pot is ACT-117. Both part numbers pulled from the Service Manual available here. I recommend printing out the Service Manual and studying it. I have no affiliation with any of the sellers linked below.

Used knob is available here:

Used pot is available here:

A smarter approach would be to buy a unit to use for parts. Especially if you plan on hanging onto the unit fro a long time. Like this one:

Repair of fluroscan (bulb replacement)

I recently had a similar model (sa-6800) down to clean controls. Removed side and top covers and faceplate. I noted that the bulbs for watt meter display are actually clear, but failed to notice possibility of replacement of such. Unit had numerous other issues and did not persue completing repair. I now have a very nice sa-5800 but the watt meter portion registers very weakly if at all. Before i go into this unit i would like to know if these are replaceable and if so are they to be had. The unit has nice clear sound and plenty of it. Thanks in advance!
