Pioneer SA-9900


The SA-9900 is a top of the line stereo integrated amplifier with state-of-the-art technology and advanced features.

Differential amplifier circuits are employed in the equaliser, tone control and power amplifier sections.

Each amplifier section is supplied by a balanced power supply system that assures excellent DC balance and stability, while nearly eliminating switching noise during control operation.

Have an SA9900, w/dead output section and a bad preamp p.s. regulator, so preamp gets +50 and -35 volts rather than +-35v. This was obviously a great unit. Planned to install LM3886 output amps to replace monster output transistors. Sadly, the power suply voltage (+-58v) exceeds the limit of the devices. Will try putting transformer primaries in series (seems to have a 100v and 120v primary). Concerned that lowering main supply will lower supply to the preamp supply's regulators too much. Oh the joy of meddling with dead amps! I have successfully modified two Sanyo recievers and a Carrera receiver. HUGE improvement! Have a five channel chip amp in the works.

Would appreciate a schematic of the Pioneer SA 9900 and amy comments.

Leave as-is!

Repairing the amp will yield much better results than gutting it and putting in LM3886 output stages. If done well, you'll have a good sounding, reliable amp.

n3oqd Usually most amplifiers with dual power supply rails also have a matched set of lower voltage, lower current dual supply rails as well. This is to power the rest of the smaller stuff inside the set. Usually this is regulated and their are a pair of PNP and NPN transistors side by side on separate but small heat sinks. I would look their first. I once owned this great set that was Pioneer's flagship integrated amp of the time. I got it non functioning and was able to repair it without a schematic. It served me well untill it was stolen. Since it is now reguarded as a very collectable item, I would try to restore it as it was originally designed and use lesser amps as the proverbial guinnipigs for mods. As for the "dead output section", I had this same issue. It turned out for my set that two of the group of four output transistors in that channel were bad along with an open emitter power transistor. I personally hand selected a beta matched set of transistors to replace all four. This is important in that the work load is distributed equally as possible in parallel push pull operation. They had similar specifications to the NTE284 and NTE285. In this the new ones were superior to the orignial. Hope this helps, N3OQD
