re: STA-2290

My curiosity about any vintage Hi-Fi can be answered in a moment thanks to Hi-Fi Engine. Having even professionally designed amplifiers for a small high-end company 20 years ago, it's interesting to see what does and doesn't change. Many of this older gear had more care to engineering and higher quality components than the stuff of today. The STA-2290 is virtually the same as the older STA-2080 except for the "digital" look and PLL tuner. It uses the big MT-200 2 screw mount Sanken 2SA1215/2SC2921 ring emitter output transistors. The signal path is class A discrete except for the power amp output stage which is class AB. The immediate weak spot I see (besides probably needing recapping and controls cleaned) are those 2SC1941s and 2SA916 dissipate quite a bit for a plastic transistor with no heatsink. Their chip inside will probably run at 90-100 degrees C! These transistors were designed for flat current gain and low capacitance, so if the 2SA916/ 2SC1941s fail, many replacements will degrade the performance...

Thanks Squlliam for uploading this!
I have been looking for this service manual for this receiver for a few years to no avail as only a few scanned pages were available. Now I can troubleshoot the watt meters that are uneven even after calibration in addition to finishing a full restoration. :) This thing is a powerful underrated beast.
