Superb amplifier. In my opinion it's better that the well-known 717 and 919, because although it's a little less punchy in the bass as the 919 it has clearer high- and midrange which gives it a more balanced sound for my ears. The 717 is simply too warm sounding for my taste. The 819 is more sweet-sounding than the 719.
If you ever come across one -which is unlikely because this is by far the rarest model from the series including the X1- buy it, have it serviced by a sansui specialist, and never sell it

I got my Sansui AU-819 about 1980 and the sound is very nice. Powerful but not too much. It is about between the 717 and the 919 which I have had both and I still have the 819. Closer to the 919 and just about the same circuit board layout but it does have the loudness switch (very nice). I have never seen another as it seems to be a bit of an odd duck. I believe is was only built for around 6 months then droped and the 919 carried on in it's place. If you can find one buy it you won't be disappointed.
