The year was 1988. I remember seeing this unit in a glossy Sony catalogue - one of many Sony catalogues I owned (and still do) in which I spent countless hours reading through and dreaming of one day, owning a piece of equipment from the ES line-up. 31 years later, my day came, and I finally got chance to live my dream and can say I am now the proud owner of this superb unit (+ another 2 exceptional and complimented partnered components from the same vintage line-up).

The CDP-557ESD in my opinion, is to be both heard and felt. It provides the pure example of audio engineering and represents heartfelt clarity that any true artist I believe, would be deserving of. The unit is both unforgiving and exquisite in its deliverance and is at the pinnacle of absolute audiophile perfection.

What a great player, even at 30+ years old. Excellent build quality all around and the drive is a joy to use, see and service. Extremely quick load, search and skip, it literally goes from first to last number within a second.
I own multiple top of the line ES players and this one is definitely one of the best.

Build quality is exceptional and the sound is powerful and punchy. Not at all harsh, just smooth and transparent. The only thing is that this machine is very unforgiving of poor source material. If it is badly recorded you will hear it loud and clear!
