Sony's last standalone CD player is a bit of an enigma. For starters it use the ancient but reliable KSS-213C pickup. However a modern digital servo enables playback of CD-RW discs and overall tracking ability is good. Secondly, almost all of the electronics are placed on the small board underneath said pickup - everything up to and including the D/A converter. This obviously means jitter is low but may have negative effects in terms of noise. Sound quality is better than you might expect with some of that softness apparent in many of Sony's cheaper models. It really benefits from a recap, and some poly film by-pass caps on the power supply. Then the sound opens up a lot more. The dearer XE570 is quite different, having a Mitsumi pickup. It also boasts a headphone output unlike this model which is strictly bare-bones. Unlike the other reviewer I beg to differ about it being a toy. It is merely a rationally designed low-cost product that offers a performance that is more than adequate for most users.
