re: MDS-JE520

If the BT451 battery (a Sanyo ML2016 with vertical solder tags) is failing you may wish to replace it with a VL series battery (Vanadium Pentoxide) as these may be easier to obtain.

Although they have the same nominal voltage as the ML (Lithium Manganese Dioxide) series the charging voltage is slightly higher (3.25-3.55V instead of 2.95-3.25V). To obtain the higher charging voltage simply bridge D451 (the diode which points towards the battery) with a jumper wire.

I've recently replaced the battery on an MDS-JE520 with a Panasonic VL3032, these have higher capacity (100mAh instead of 25mAh) but cost less than £5 delivered. The inner edges of the solder tags can be trimmed with side cutters so that the new battery fits the existing battery mounting holes.

re: MDS-JE520

The internal BT451 1-528-739-11 BATTERY, LITHIUM (SECONDARY) can cause problems if it is not charging or faulty i.e. garbage on display or not writing the TOC when the recorder is used in "Timer Record" mode and returns to operation from power on...replacement of the internal (soldered on board) battery will cure the fault preventing data loss in the volatile memory.........
