Review is based on build quality, at this point...I am currently preparing my STR-V5 for daily use. I am very impressed with the build of the receiver. The power supply, transformers, and heat sinks seem to be overbuilt for a unit of this wattage. The layout is very neat and logical, unlike some older (late 60's/early 70's) Sony products (i.e. STR7055). Some tips, if you have an intermittent channel, or you have to goose the volume one you turn it on to activate one channel - turn to the relay for service. This relay, despite being on the left channel power amp board, services both channels. You can access it without desoldering the boards. Simply remove draw ties to give wire to boards slack, then remove heat sink screws for left channel - this will give you about .5 of an inch clearance to remove the top of the relay to service the contacts. Another tip, if your power meters become unresponsive, inspect and replace the small 22uF capacitor on the board that controls the meters. Looking forward to auditioning the unit once it's cleaning is done and it's reassembled.

Excellent receiver. Very powerful, no sound distortion.
Perfect combo with my 1978 Yamaha YP511 turntable.

This model is underrated compared to the Marantz and pioneer receivers of its era. The Sony has plenty of clean power and it is built well. The power supply has a toroidal transformer.
