Really no shortcomings on this deck! Allows you to compare Line in to recording. Bought in early 80s and made many great custom tapes, before there was iPod there was this great sounding deck!

Good sounding deck to playback pre recorded material, Not sure about the recording quality as I dont record much .The BSL motor is a bit of a technical oddball as it uses a brush-less motor capable to great stability but drives the capstan via belt. The mechanics use a stamped steal /plastic hybrid that gets brittle with age. My unit came with extensive damage from shipping but its easy to repair with the correct size screws and epoxy. For folks that listen via headphones this unit might not be for you as the volume adjustment is in the form of a switch with quite large steps (-24db, -12dB, -6dB, -3dB, 0dB). The VU meters are very responsive with peak hold feature. On the convenience side the deck has 3 features:
1) Timer switch - turns on REC or Play when powered up,
2) Auto Play - rewinds to beginning and start play
3) Memory Rewinds to 000 position on counter
What more ...... hope it lasts another 38 years........

Same specs as TOTL TC-K81 without the calibration test circuitry. Has discrete P/R heads in adjustable Sony mount block. Id give it 10 but it doesnt have the calibration test tones. A little soft on the Dolby B SNR at 65 but it is what it was back then. If you have tape curling off first capstan, increase back tension of supply real via brake spring notch location. I had to replace spring as I was on heaviest notch already. This deck came with 2 different heads depending on serial number. Early ones had Canon mfg. discrete 'tall' heads and later ones had shorter Sony sourced heads.
