Bought this strictly for a playback device with outstanding results. I haven't replaced belts yet (where can you buy them?) I have made a couple of test recordings with very satisfactory results. My only disapointment is i can't play the cheaper 3-3/4 ips tapes which accounts for about half of what's out there for pre-recorded tape.

Great sounding 4 Track Deck. Built like a Tank. If you get one, just replace the belt and your good to go.

re: 22-4

I just bought a used one on line. Received it last night.
Powered up fine, meters bounced. I put on a reel and pushed
FF. It ran fine for about 5 seconds and pop and then a long
RRRRRRRRRR from inside. Looks like the belts snapped.
It'll probably take me about a month to get it all back up but
I have a feeling I'll like it. The left reel post was also bent.
Looks like that will be replaced as well. I just worry about geting the heads
allined again.

re: 22-4

On your 22-4 On the left reel post you can bend it back take a deep well socket one that will go over the hole length and if you are gental with it you can bend it back.
Bend it a little at a time slowely, I just did two on a Teac X-7 and it worked out ok.. the belt has nothing to do with the fast forward or fast reverse, the counter works off the fast reverse motor but it brakeing should not keep the fast speeds from working.when you take the cover off be carefully putting it back on all the knobs have to be stright to go back in do each one at a time these are not stationary they can go side ways and when you push the cover down they can brake, and when they do it brakes the plastic coming out of the switch not just the leg that you push.and when that happens you have to replace the switch the one i broke was on a Teac X-7 Timer switch. that switch is not easy to find. I hope this info helps you, good luck.

Nice machine

I bought this unit to be used exclusively as a playback device. I was a little disappointed when I discovered no 3 -3/4 ips capabilities, but then I realized this unit is more aimed at a semi-pro recording. I bought some 15ips tapes from a radio station, the sound is outstanding. I wish I could find more.

re: Nice machine

I recently bought one online. In the owners manual it says that it is capable of 3-3/4 ips but that speed doesn't work for me either. Did you find out if there was actually a problem?

I still use this machine in my studio. But now one relay (stop) keeps clicking. doesn't working properly anymore,... help? Help??

Tascam relay clicking

First I would try cleaning the contacts that operate the relay, also check the wiring to the relay coil, a poor connection somewhere may cause the problem. if the problem is internal to the relay you might need to replace it. Hopefully you can find a spare on EBAY . If there are two identical relays, try swapping them. I suspect something in the coil input wiring.
