The UHER 9500 Royal de Luxe is a small gem. When reviewing an item we have to take into consideration its purpose and the historical moment in which it was manufactured. Otherwise our benchmark, our reference, shall be misplaced and our opinion biased and produced out of the frame established by the environment in which the item dwells. This said, the multitasking little 9500 Royal de Luxe has been created to provide ambience music and also to serve as a work tool for whoever needs to use a recorder away from home, for professional reasons. Using it to record reports or to interview people is to take matters seriously it provides you with cristal clear hours of voice recordings and allows you to easily access the recordings you wish to listen to. rewinding and fast forward are served by a really exact mechanical counter.
On the other hand carefully made musical records in stereo, at 7 3/4 ips won't shame anyone. Bass is controlled, mid frequencies are transparent and treble, sweet. Speed fine adjustment is a plus of high importance mainly for those who wish to use the recorder to reproduce tapes recorded in another recorder or pre recorded sixties and early seventies tapes. Vow and flutter are low for the seventies and hiss, hiss with a new tape is hardly noticeable. Considering the low price at which it used to be sold this UHER Kleine Wunder deserves top notch evaluation within its class.
